London Nigerians 48 Tabard 12
Tabard’s season got off to a bad start conceding eight tries to a useful London Nigerian side. Tabard were starting with a new front five who to their credit grew into the game and held their own pretty much at the set piece but the pace of the game on an all weather pitch was too much for Tabard to cope with.
An early yellow card didn’t help matters and the extra man allowed Nigerians to clock three tries in the first fifteen minutes.
The first yellow was followed by another as the hosts bagged two more tries by half time.
The sides turned round with Tabard 31 points to nil down but got the half off to good start after Mark Salteras first put in an excellent tackle and then made an incisive break through the home side’s defence. His efforts were rewarded as the ball found its way to Jonny Aguila who scored in the corner with Jack Reilly adding the conversion.
Having got off to a good start Tabard were guilty of handing the ball back to the visitors with a kick to nothing. A try saving tackle by Harry Gough set up a scrum for Nigerians who collected seven points as the referee awarded a penalty try. Nigerians collected another try from the restart after an favourable bounce of the ball caught the defence flat footed before good work in attack resulted in them going for their final try.
Tabard finished well, with Jack Reilly turning ball over and setting up some good attacks, the last of which forced Nigerians to concede four penalties before the ball found its way to Harry Gough who scored in the corner.
Tabard should take some positives from the way they finished the game and look forward to welcoming Harrow to Cobden Hill next Saturday.
