(HT 0-0)

Royston RFC

Tabard 62 Royston 5

Tabard built on their improved performance last weekend to record an emphatic victory much to the delight of Club President Ross Hopcroft. The game was played out in very difficult conditions but Tabard were able to put together some good rugby to secure their first win of the season.

The home side started well and were unlucky not to score from the off but a penalty after five minutes set up flanker Jim Sonner to cross the line for the opening try. Tabard maintained the pressure and good play between the backs and forwards allowed Paul Smith in for Tabard’s second after 15 minutes and this was followed by some excellent play by the backs and finished off by Jack Jennings for Tabard’s third try after 20 minutes to take the score to 15 - 0. Hooker Nick Westaway was the grateful recipient of some good work by No 8 George Hurford and he crossed for a try after 35 minutes play followed shortly after by prop John Tilley going in for another try. Jack Reilly added two conversions taking the half time score to 29 - 0.

The second half saw Tabard maintain their dominance and clock up another five tries. Marcus Bunning went in after ten minutes to get the score board ticking which was followed quickly by Sonner picking up his second of the game. Five minutes later and Joe Welch went in for a wonderful individual effort before Will Thompson made it a try for each of the front row which took the score to 55 - 0.

Royston, to their credit didn’t give in and scored a consolation before Sonner went over for his hat trick just before the referee blew for full time with the score 62 - 5.
