Happy New Year and welcome to the January edition of the Tabard Touchline.
From a 1st XV perspective the first half of the season was hugely successful after what was an extremely challenging 2017/2018 campaign.
It started with a solid 2 month pre-season training programme with great numbers throughout and a really positive vibe was starting to develop amongst the senior men’s section of the club.
Although the 1st XV started the season with 2 losses from their first 3 games they righted the ship and finished the first round of the league with 8 wins and only 3 losses, with playing highlights including big Home wins against Old Streetonians and Stevenage and a fantastic away win against Datchworth.
The second round has not started as well as we would have liked with 1 win, 2 losses and a draw, the last result probably being the most deflating feeling in sport, much like kissing your sister, although acceptable in some parts of Northern England, generally frowned upon everywhere else.
I have every confidence that with some hard work on the training pitch that we will get back to our winning ways in no time and have a really strong finish to the season.
One of the most pleasing things about the season so far has been the performance and consistency of the 2nd XV, with a large number of players pushing on and making the step up to the 1st XV when required. Depth is a huge part of success at any club, and the hard work of Jack, Jim, Ewen, Tudor, Greg and all the 2nd XV boys has really helped develop that at Tabard this season.
On behalf of the men’s senior section we’d just like to wish the ladies team all the best for the rest of the season. So far the Women’s 1st XV has had some great results and sit 6th in the league table, I know they are always looking for new players, so if you know any ladies out there who want to give rugby a try tell them to get in touch with LJ or Jeremy.
That’s it for now, but I hope everyone at Tabard has a fantastic 2019 and I look forward to seeing you all around the club soon.
